The present study aimed to explain addiction proneness among university students based on executive functions and distress tolerance. The research design was descriptive-correlational, employing a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. The statistical population comprised all students enrolled at Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman during the 2024–2025 academic year. A sample of 352 students was selected using multistage cluster random sampling. Data were collected through standardized self-report questionnaires, and subsequently analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software. The findings indicated that the proposed model demonstrated an adequate fit. Executive functions and distress tolerance had significant direct effects on addiction proneness. Furthermore, distress tolerance played a significant mediating role in the relationship between executive functions and addiction proneness. In conclusion, the findings suggest that deficits in executive functions and low levels of distress tolerance can contribute to increased addiction proneness among university students. Conversely, strengthening these psychological resources may serve as a protective factor against addiction vulnerability. It is recommended that the interplay between these variables be considered in addiction-related interventions and the design of preventive programs for university students.
