براساس ادبیات پژوهشی، کاهش کیفیت روابط دوستانه، پیشرفت تحصیلی پائین و اهمال‌کاری می‌تواند از اثرات منفی رفتار فابینگ در دانشجویان باشد. بنابراین، پژوهش حاضر با هدف تعیین نقش واسطه‌ای اعتیاد به گوشی‌های هوشمند در رابطه بین ویژگی‌های شخصیتی و رفتار فابینگ در دانشجویان انجام شد. در قالب یک طرح توصیفی ـ همبستگی از نوع مدل معادلات ساختاری، تعداد 615 نفر (334 زن، 281 مرد) از دانشجویان دانشگاه‌های شهر تهران به روش نمونه‌گیری دردسترس انتخاب شدند و به پرسشنامه‌های ویژگی‌های شخصیتی نئو (فرم 60 سوالی)، پرسشنامه استاندارد اعتیاد به گوشی‌های هوشمند و مقیاس عمومی رفتار فابینگ به شکل آنلاین پاسخ دادند. نتایج مطالعه نشان داد ویژگی شخصیتی برون‌گرایی با میزان رفتار فابینگ رابطه منفی و معنی‌دار دارد.  هم‌چنین ویژگی‌های شخصیتی روان‌رنجوری و برون‌گرایی با اعتیاد به گوشی‌های هوشمند رابطه مثبت و معنی‌دار و ویژگی‌های شخصیتی میزان توافق‌پذیری و وجدانی بودن با اعتیاد به گوشی‌های هوشمند رابطه منفی و معنی‌دار داشتند. متغیر اعتیاد به گوشی‌های هوشمند در رابطه بین ویژگی‌های شخصیتی روان‌رنجوری، برون‌گرایی، توافق‌پذیری و وجدانی‌بودن با رفتار فابینگ در دانشجویان نقش واسطه‌ای داشت. به نظر می‌رسد در محیط‌های درمانی می‌توان با مداخله بر روی عوامل خطر و اعتیاد به گوشی‌های هوشمند، میزان رفتار فابینگ در دانشجویان را بهبود بخشید.
